Miss Kissie ill...
Hey all;
An unusual post from me. Silver Kestrel the Ransacker, affectionately known as Miss Kissie is sick.
Kissie will be 12 in April and has been producing loose stools for a couple of weeks, plus she's lost quite a bit of weight and occasionally up-chucks.
Vet has taken blood; we are awaiting results, but in the meantime are giving her an antibiotic (twice a day), an anti-diarrheal plus a pro-biotic (each once a day).
She continues to have a good appetite, uses the Box, coat is glossy, eyes are clear, nose is moist, energy level seems fine, still goes to town on her scratch pad, still very social...likes a sheltered spot for napping, but does not hide.
Stools are pancake batter to toothpaste consistency. Color has been dark tan, but normal brown seems to be returning.
A suggestion we are acting on is to find wet foods that do not contain fish meal as a component, which we have been informed may trigger allergic reaction in elder kitties. Kitty Tuna will remain a once a week treat. We've also tried mixing in a little pumpkin or yogurt to her wet food.
I also got a kitty treat, which has pro-biotic properties...
...just got off the phone with the vet.
Blood work looks okay, he quizzed us on the dietary adjustments and likes what we are doing.
Hopefully, just some dietary changes...

More than the allergies. She is having some colon issues and gastritis issues herself. She quickly went back to her normal BM's after the Pred., which is a relief to me, because my previous cat had IBD that turned into cancer. I have been worried that Akira was starting to show signs of IBD. I still don't know, but she is responding well to the Pred. That's still far better than what happened with my previous cat that never get any better.
Great news Pip! We are both making positive strides in getting our babies better. Hope you get the other ones ears figured out. Our one dog gets a yeast infection in her ears on occasion so we keep a bottle of drops on hand from the vet. They get dark and yucky with a smell too.
Snickers is responding better to his increase in insulin. Appetite has seemed better the last couple days.

I'm sending a couple sites to read Pip for miss Chesapeakes ear problem, IMO its either an infection or mites, both would need a prescription drop to clear up...
One of the sites below is for dogs but I'm sure relates to cats as well, just couldn't find the specific kitty site this a.m....
btw..wouldn't use rubbing alcohol in the ears since theres a chance that she'll be pawing and licking this area...

We talked to Doc Knilans (our vet) this afternoon.
He is very encouraged by Kessie's response to the Prednisone therepy. He want us to continue the 1/2 a tab twice a day for a full three weeks, then we'll go to 1/2 tab a day for another 3 and then 1/4 tab another 3...then see how she does off the tab. He did say we may need to keep her on a very low dose, long term.
During the last visit, he thought that the biotabs we were giving her looked perfectly fine after examining the ingredient list, even gave her one himself.
She has not vomited in a week, since the aftermath of the last vet visit, and really, really likes the Science Diet sensitive stomach kibble, we think to the exclusion of the Friskies Indoor, Purina One Kitten or Blue Buffalo Duck...
Now, to figure out why Miss Chesapeake's right ear is so gunky all the time. I've examined the stuff (dark, tarry, smells kind of musky) with a magnifying glass and the signs I've read about ear mites do not seem present.
I clean it out with a soft cotton pad and use a mix of water, glycerin and a bit of rubbing alcohol. This, she doesn't like, but forgives me as she still sleeps by me most nights. Another puzzle to solve before we all head to Maryland in August.

Nice to hear that Kissie Kitty is feeling better. Akira had to start Prednisilone recently, too.

The past couple of days Miss Kessie has been "depositing" less often, and is getting closer to normal...fingers still crossed! =)

I hope Kessie continues to get only better! What sweet owners she has who love and care for her when she is sick and old. We switched our cats over to Purina One Beyond. It doesn't have hairball control, but our long haired cat hasn't had one since she started eating the food. It has no corn or chicken by product in it. There is salmon and chicken types. My long haired cat with the glass stomach throws up the salmon food, but loves the chicken.
Well, here it is Sunday (BTW, a very Joyous Easter to all our Western Christian friends, Orthodox Easter in next week, which my wife's family celebrates)...
Linda, our vet did check for parasites, thank you for the info. We've never fed our kitties anything but store bought. Once in awhile a bit of people meat as a special treat, but 99.9% of their food is regular cat cans or kibble.
Miss Kessie has not upchucked since Wednesday night, after the stressful day of the latest vet visit. Keeping her off fish the past couple of days seems to agree with her, not normal yet, but no more squirts.
One editorial comment atop the basket of laundry in the kitchen, ah well, had to do a load of wash anyway. =)
Trying everything we can, without being too disruptive to kitty's routine. Been mixing Science diet wet food half and half with Friskies or Blue Buffalo, she eats that...appetite is good.
She really likes the Science Diet sensitive stomach kibble, plus the Prednisone seems to be giving her some relief. (Anita is very good at giving meds to cats, and Kessie and her are snuggling on the floor, looks like Kessie knows Anita is only trying to help by putting that thing down her throat.)

Just to make sure, we even shut the lid on the toilet in the master bath, which Kessie, Hildie and Chessie would drink from (Teia likes to look at the flushing water, but I don't think she has the idea of this as a source of drinking water). We change out their drinking water every day or so, too.

Speaking of fish, Pip...about 20 yrs+ ago our cat Big Tom became very ill and the Vet did some research and found out he had some strange rare parasite that he had gotten from a piece of a fish that we had caught in a pond. Of course at the time we did not realize the danger of feeding him raw fish. Anyway, she got to the bottom of it, gave him the right med, and he immediately got well. He was at the point of being gravely ill. She said what he had was rare and she had not ever come across a case like it personally. Wish I knew what it was called. She is still in practice in the Houston area. If you think it might help I could try to get in touch with her.

Pip....So sorry to hear Kessie is not coming along as well as we all thought, but your post of 2hrs ago sounds very encouraging. I've been thinking of her the last couple days; has she been checked for a blockage in her intestines? I hope you'll be able to utilize that ultra sound machine...it will show so much more than a simple xray. Best of luck with that!
Sara...aw, honey, I'm sorry Snickers hasn't improved to the point we all would of liked. Ultrasound, then biopsy of the mass? How is Snickers eating, drinking and taking his shots. How are YOU doing? Update your thread, k? I'm sorry, I've been overwhelmed with taking care of business at home, but have been checking on your thread for updates.

Same here, our vet has xray but not ultrasound. They have recommended one and will be getting ahold of him for us.
Our vet is a bit more of a country vet, has x-ray, but not ultrasound. He does have a colleague he recommends if we'd like to use that diagnostic tool.
We'll see how Kessie does with the new evidence from the fish experiment.

I really would like to get a kitty, but not in the near future. I'm dealing w/ some money problems and am looking for a better paying job before I get a kitty again. When the time is right, I will be rescuing a kitty from the humane society. No other option for me! You get the very best animals from there, and they never fail to show how thankful they are. Those animals deserve the best!
