Siouxie's Fur

I have a very sweet princess named Siouxie (susie) who has always been ultra soft and silky, like petting a chinchilla. She is about 7 or 8 years old, could be older. We adopted her from a Vet's office that had found her abandoned in front of their office. So, here is my problem, well, her problem. Recently her fur is not as lux as it used to be, within the last two months. She seems fine other wise and eats normally and no behavioral changes of any kind. And she's developing lots of mats on her lower back and flanks. She's extremely timid when it comes to combs, or any other object coming near her. Sounds and people other myself or husband scare her under the bed too. I know I need to do something but I don't know what. She is going to be so traumatized being taken to a groomer/vet and I can't get near with scissors. What can/should I do?

Hi, and welcome to the cat forum!  It sounds like Siouxie might have a touch of arthritis OR is overweight? like my kitty is and has become unable to groom the top and back area.  I do have to help my girl out with a comb and brush.  Here's how I started out combing my cat who didn't like it at first either.  Try introducing the comb while kitty is sleeping and relaxed.  That's how I started off.  If the matts are too tight though, it may take a groomer to get them out initially and just get it all over with in one shot and then you take over from there.  I'm sure some sort of mild tranquilizer could be given if going to the vet is that much of a stresser for your girl.

You're a good mom and very right about the matts.  Something does need to be done because they twist the skin and can be very painful for kitty.

Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

Aren't matts in the fur feeel the same as you stroking the kitty backwards (so their hair stands up) because I read that that hurts them alot too..
