ear tumors help

my very sweet 18yr. cat,  Mr Lucy,  has been diagnosed with classic ear tumors. He is too old for surgery which I can not afford anyway. I give him gabapentin and use ear wash as much as possible. Also antibiotic ointment in his ears. There is a brown crusty discharge daily and an audible rattle when he shakes his head.. I want to keep him absolutely as comfortable as possible during his last years. He is still  eating and pooping regularly. Am I helping his comfort or just prolonging the inevitable for my own selfish reasons? Any similar experiences will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If Mr. Lucy was my cat, I would run these questions by the vet. The vet is not going to demand you do surgery you can't afford, but he or she would be an invaluable resource about what can be done (if anything) to make Mr. Lucy more comfortable, and believe it or not, our vet was also the best advisor I ever had when I was trying to decide to make a euthanasia decision.
