Chiari I and wrist pain

I'm 18 years old, have suffered from wrist pains for about six years and was recently diagnosed with Chiari malformation type I. The thing that bothers me is that my wrist pains were regarded as chronical tendinitis that kept coming and going until highschool when it turned constant and I started seeing doctors regularly. Due to loss of sensation in my right hand, I was put into cervical spine MRI which showed a 9 mm herniation in my cerebellum. I had always ignored the headaches and dizziness as neck tension or too little sleep, and my main problem had been the aching, weak and numb arm.

I wonder, are wrist pains typical for Chiari? Is it safe for me to get rid of the wrist braces now?

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

I would continue to use the wrist braces for now as it is common for some with Chiari to also have Ehlers-Danlos* which could be causing ur wrist pain, with EDS* ur joints can sublex or dislocate completely causing a lot of pain, if u have this the brace will hold the joints stable and u will have less pain.

Do ask to be checked for EDS.

I'm 19 and have a 9mm herniation too! Haha not really something to be excited about..but I suffer from wrist pains as well, and i even have a small cyst that i can see through my skin. I've asked my doctors if it could be related, but I just get the usual runaround. Make sure to consult with a doctor that is a specialist in Chiari, because most doctors only have a general idea of it. Which is beyond aggrivating.
I wish you luck and less pain.

Thank you! It seems my phys. sent me to a Chiari specialist - it's difficult to find one in a country as small as mine - so I'll be getting some answers later on. Wishing painlessness to all Chiaririans out there.
