Chiari newly diagnosed

Hi everyone,
I have recently been diagnosed with a chiari malformation after an MRI following onset of daily "stabbing" headaches. I get many types of headaches, and they occur on a daily basis but the stabbing was most alarming. i have also gone through severe dizzy spells and some days feel as if I am in a complete fog, unable to think clearly. Is this due to chiari? Is there any danger associated with the malformation?
Thanks for any help.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

May I ask what testing you have had ..obviously an MRI...was it cervical spine or brain ? And have you had the thoracic and lumbar spine MRI or a CINE MRI?

We all need to have many tests to see just how our Chiari is affecting us and our over all health....breathing issues is one that should raise a red flag....so be aware of your symptoms and any changes contact your Dr right away so he/she can determine what course of action is needed in your case. Drop attacks are another symptom to be aware of and contact the Dr if these should start.....

Our symptoms are due to the obstruction to CSF flow, and this obstruction can lead to the formation of a syrinx or Syringomyelia...which can compress the brain stem or spinal cord depending on location of the syrinx.

Again, more testing, and having the right Dr is key, you want a true Chiari specialist to help guide you through this.

Educate yourself on Chiari and ALL related conditions this will help you choose the right Dr  for you.

Hi there, thanks for the response. I had an MRI of the brain without contrast, and the radiologist report recommended further imaging as well as seeing a neurosurgeon. I haven't and any breathing issues, and don't think I've had drop attacks (no fainting, just severe dizzy/ "foggy" feeling at times). Lots and lots of headaches, neck pain when I look downward, tons of head pressure upon exertion. I guess my main concern is that I am not seeing a neurosurgeon for some time and am wondering if this can cause anything serious in the mean time
No...just keep track of activities that trigger your symptoms to worsen and try to avoid them or slow down your activities to help keep the symptoms at bay.....it is when we over do it that we feel worse...so listen to your body to see what is best for you until you see a NS.....try to relax as stress and anxiety can make you feel worse.
Alright, I appreciate the helpful information. Thanks!
