Chiari

Hello everyone, I'm new to the sight and I was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and January 2013 and just had my decompression surgery in June. I'm 3 months out in recovery. I was wondering if others are having a hard time getting back out exercising. I can walk but it's not a fast walk just slow and that's about all I can do. Anyone else having the same problem?

I had decompression surgery in June also and I also have trouble walking I walk slow also. I had those problems before surgery. I also had tremors and my neurosurgeon thinks I may have Parkinson s disease. I was on levodopa for Parkinson disease but he said a week on medication wasn't long enough to work so now I have to go to a neurologist. Maybe your problems are recovery related. I would mention it to your neurosurgeon when you go back to see him. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum,

What u r experiencing is "normal" for this point in time post op....in fact at 3 months some symptoms may return but not like u had b4 surgery.

In time u will gain strength and find u have less and less symptoms cropping up.

Exercise at this point needs to be light and slow...we do post exercises for those that are limited bcuz of Chiari or they are post op....u will find it in Weds weight in thread,

I am 4 yrs post op and each yr I found I had more strength and stamina....so do give urself the time and move forward slowly as going too fast can cause set backs. Hang in there.

Thank you for the reply. Yes I've had some symptoms that has came back. I'm just getting frustrated bc I'm not losing weight and walking slow isn't getting it off. I don't think I would be that concerned about if fitness wasn't a big requirement of me in the military. My career is on the line because of my condition.

Thank you for the response. I go back to the doctor on Thursday so we will see what she has to say about the problems I've been having. What day in june did you have yours? my surgery was june 6. I hope you don't have Parkinson's disease and I hope you find out what's causing your shaking. Hope you get to feeling better soon as well.

I understand ur frustrations and weight loss is difficult for many of us, I am right there with u....

U may need an office job for a time when u r doing better as some things required for the military may cause set backs if u try to do them too soon.

We are all different in how we recover and how much we can do and in what time frame....if we have related conditions play into this as well.

I wish I had more positive info for u......all I can say is be patient.
