PTC WITH CHIARI

I have now had two chiari surgeries.  The most recent one was 6 months ago and the headaches are back.  I have now been told I might have Pseudotumor Cerebri Syndrome.  Does anyone know much about this and if the shunts work or not?

Do me a favor and ask to be checked for EDS, I said the same thing when I looked at it and I do have it.....there are soooooooo many types and u may not have many of the more typical symptoms....but do, get it ruled out.

One thing I have noticed is  those with unDX'd EDS tend to develop ICP or PTC post op and many times I feel it is the body rejecting the dura patch...or some other foreign matter in the body.....

What type of patch was used for ur dura plasty?

Hi Selma,

thanks for the response. The first surgery was just a decompression, the second had the duraplasty with a titanium plate.  I looked up the condition you mentioned and I do not have any of the symptoms.

I had seen some posts regarding shunts and I agree, it doesn't sound like a direction I would want to go unless it gets much worse.  I think I would rather live with the headaches.  They are doing another MRI this week, so we will see what path I will be heading down next.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Many can develop this condition post op or it may have been there all along....but it is a typical post op condition many have to deal with.

I would suggest b4 u go looking for a shunt, to look at y u have to have 2 surgeries and what all was done in both...such as, did u have a duraplasty and  if so what type of patch....next were u checked for ehlers-danlos?

Once u have a shunt placed, u can have issues with it, and they do help, but they can malfunction and get clogged....so it  can lead to multiple surgeries....

There are a few members with shunts that can give u first hand info....keep in mind we are all different and will all have different experiences with shunts and Chiari surgery.
