Preop appointment need help with a few things...

I have a basilar invagination, chiari and EDS.

For the basilar invagination I have had a tough time finding research as it is even less common than chiari, so if anyone else has had it and can maybe help with a few questions that you think would be important to ask prior to surgery would be helpful

For EDS, I have seen on the forum that epithelial patches are safest because of the rejections rate do you know where I can find more on this?

I feel like i have read every credible article my search engine will bring up, but still want to do more research if you have found any good articles on these things I would really really appreciate it.

THANKS ahead of time!

I wish I could help but I only have Chiari out of the 3...

My advice...any of the questions you have, make sure that you get them answered at your pre op? I was too nervous or overwhelmed to ask the right questions...and then I was left wondering afterwards. Things like follow up appts and how to contact your NS if you have concerns.

Good luck
Carolyn

Hi...I do not know of a link to read more on this as I was told by my drs that having EDS puts me at a higher risk for rejection of ne foreign matter....so my patch would be from my own skin.

How are Ehlers-Danlos syndromes diagnosed?

The diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is based upon the clinical findings of the patient and the family history. For some types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a skin biopsy to determine the chemical makeup of the connective tissue can help to suggest the diagnosis.

How are Ehlers-Danlos syndromes treated?

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are treated according to the particular manifestations present in a given individual.

Skin protection (from injury of trauma and sun, etc.) is critical. Wounds must be tended with great care and infections treated and prevented. Suturing can be difficult as the skin can be extremely fragile.

Joint injury must be avoided. Occasionally, bracing may be necessary to maintain joint stability. Exercises that strengthen the muscles that support the joints can help to minimize joint injury. Contact sports and activities involving joint impact should be avoided.
