RE: Pills Sticking in Throat, Question

I had CM surgery in late 2013. My recovery has been slow, I believe, due to age & damages done prior to surgery that are not fully restored. Over the last 6 months or so I also am having food sticking in the soft palate/high throat. I am able to clear the food simply by a slight cough or strong exhale. I have noticed drier foods like rice or corn based chips are particularly difficult. It feels as though there is a dry area in my throat. But it does concern me should the choking area move lower where I would not be able to clear it as quickly. Selma, I read your answer to the earlier question. Any comments?

As far as recovery I still have significant balance issues, I cannot extend my head backward without holding my head in my hand & have problems sleeping because of trying to find just the right position for my neck. My vision has improved some but I still have random double vision that is hard to clear  For a long time after surgery I had problems with such extreme hypersensitivity to noise  I could not go to the grocery store, or church, movies, large crowds, etc. I did get hearing aids for hearing loss & they came with a little remote for me to adjust sound even to the point of no sound. They help, but if I sense an issue with noise, I leave the source.

I am very glad I had the surgery even with these issues. These problems & others were a result of the CM & would only have worsened over time. I live in AZ & had a wonderful NS from Barrows Neurological and Neurosurgical Institute in Phoenix. They are known world wide for excellency in Neuro care & research.

Hi...not sure what age you are but I too took a long time to heal from this and found the more I did the worse I would feel.....but with time I was able to do more and by time I do mean years....my surgery was in '09 and I still have some lingering issues which may be due to related conditions so I consider my surgery a success and am so happy to have had it done...that said I really feel too many Drs and patients recovering from this surgery do not realize just how long it may take for us to recover and what we can and can not do post op.

As for you sticking in the throat issues.I have to ask....do you have sleep apnea? Have you shared this issue with your Dr? I had issues with swallowing but not quite like what you have going on. Only one other member that I recall had issues with the soft pallet had sleep apnea and had surgery on that area.......

Talk with your Dr and let us know what you find out.
