Hi  Shanel and welcome to the Chiari forum.

May I ask is this Dr experienced with those with Chiari malformation?

And do you also have Chiari ?

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

It is not what the dentist might do, it is the position we r in that affects us, ao I wonder do u also have chiari?

So going to the dentist might affect symptoms of chiari?  I can imagine that a root canal would aggravate any condition you have, if simply because of the lingering pain involved after the pain meds have worn off, and just make everything worse for a while after, but unless the dentist accidentally does something wrong, I would hope it wouldn't create any lasting problems.

I had a wisdom tooth extraction 9 days before my decompression surgery. It was an absolute nightmare because my wisdom tooth was fused to my first molar, so I spent two hours with the oral surgeon sawing and yanking on my tooth. Needless to say, it wreaked havoc with my chiari symptoms! I have to have the other 3 removed still, and I am TERRIFIED! Luckily, the oral surgeon now knows what to expect in my mouth. I also had a tonsillectomy yesterday (4 months post decompression) and that has caused severe headache and dizziness/nausea. I am just thankful the anesthesiologist and ENT surgeon were aware of my issues and very gentle. Remember, everyone's experience is different! Just make sure all of your treating physicians are aware of your condition. I actually carry around a couple chiari handbooks to give to new doctors I see! I wish you all the best!

I see this was posted long ago and you may not respond, but figured I would give it a shot. I  found this info helpful , as I have been diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and need my wisdom teeth extracted soon… I know my question is not related to this forum topic completely, but was wondering if you ever had the Chiari decompression surgery? I need it eventually and am terrified. Thanks and hope all is well.
Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Since this is an older thread and I am not the person that posted it, I am answering as the original poster may no longer be an active member on the site.
I had the Chiari PFD in '09 and I have seen benefits with each year that passed.
The key to having this surgery have the most beneficial outcome is to educate yourself on Chiari and ALL related conditions and research Drs to get a true Chiari specialist and the right Dr for you!!
It is still a scary surgery, but I think any and all surgeries are scary...but to have the right Dr and know you are doing what is needed may help you calm down and feel more secure about the surgery.
You can create a NEW thread so your questions may be more noticeable by current members.

Thanks for writing this post! My dentist
told me yesterday that I need to get dental surgery, but I have never done it, so I don't know who to go to. Does anyone know a good dental surgeon in Salt Lake or Utah county? Thanks for you help.

Inform ur dentist about ur dx, but I don't know what effects ur dental surgery could have. I was dx back in Feb....and had several surgeries while waitin on the dx.Granted they weren't dental , but surgery the same.

Are u concerned with the anesthisia(sp?) or the type and location of the surgery?

Good luck
Godspeed
