Hi Janie...yes it is ......this is the best procedure after a major surgery to be monitored afterward bcuz of the drugs used to put u under......

Yes it could be, the reason is more for mentoring as ICU suggests Intensive care, they have the facilities and staff to give one on one care, in a ward the patent nurse ratio is going to be higher.

that's actually great..I feel better for the after care part..
rod44 is correct. Considering that the surgery can tamper with the flow of CSF (increasing it to areas of your brain that may have been deprived & ensuring there are no leaks). Monitoring of your neuro vital signs every 2 hours is standard and necessary to be sure no changes in your level of consciousness occur. The ICU is the safest place to be due to the low nurse to patient ratio. I just had my surgery on the 15th and can vouch for the needed aftercare. Good luck to you!
Actually it was one of my ICU nurses, my PM nurse that fought with the dr to change the meds...I was on morphine and vomiting.....they said it was the anesthiesa....I have had several surgeries recently and never had this kind of reaction....the new item was the morphine...she was determined to get it fixed and she did....she even readjusted the schedule for all my meds which helped me feel so much better.

The nursing staff are with you 24/7 and look after not just your medical needs but your concerns and your personal needs as well.

How long is a normal stay in icu
Hi marmar. How are you?
As Kitkatkiecke pointed out surgery can tamper with the flow of CSF so it would depend on how well every thing goes during and post opp.
Monitoring wise at a guess 24 to 48 hours.

Marla, I was in ICU from thurs after surgery till 5 pm on sat.....when I was moved to a reg room. I may have been able to move sooner if I didn't have the affects from the morphine...and it deff would ahve been alot later if my ICU eve nurse didn't work as hard as she did to get the meds changed.

I was told that the first 24 hours are spent in the ICU and after that if all is well, you are transferred to a regular med-surg floor. My entire stay was in ICU only because there were no beds available. I only complained once though after realizing the benefits of staying put!
