10 year old boy has fascination with shoes and socks

My 10 year old son has always had issues with taking his shoes and socks off either at other people's homes or even at bedtime.  Now, he has developed a fascination with taking shoes and socks off of dolls and most recently, I caught him looking up videos on his Ipod of people taking off their shoes and socks.  I ask him why this fascinated him and he said he didn't know and that it was funny to him.  He has been punished and threatened about taking the shoes and socks off of the dolls but continues to do so without hesitation.  He was recently diagnosed with ADHD and is on Adderal for that and does have some less serious behavior issues, but this is very troubling to me.  I live in a rural area and don't know if I need to find a professional for him to talk to or what steps I need to take.  I am afraid my reaction to this is not helping the situation and I am feeling very desperate for answers.  Please help!

This behavior clearly has a compulsive quality to it, but the precise nature of it can only be determined via an evaluation with a pediatric mental health clinician. So yes, it would be prudent to arrange such an evaluation. What is the city closest to you? Also, it is not useful to adopt a punitive approach to this behavior. When you consider it, what is he doing that is wrong and deserving of punishment? While the behavior bothers you, it should not be characterized as wrong.

The service you need can be located at North Carolina Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill (tel. 919-966-4131).  Ask to be connected to the Child Mental Health or Child Psychiatry Department.

Thank you again so much for your response and the information.  My son has actually been a patient at this hospital before.  I will be calling them this morning.  Thanks again!
