5 year old boy who can not control his emotions

I have a sweet 5 year old who has been full time at Primrose school since a baby and now in Pre-K. For the past month or so he has been sort of snapping once he does not get what he wants and over little things. He gets overwhelmed by his emotions and we can not resonate with him... to the point that sometimes I am worried that he would hurt himself... he takes him a long time to calm down as physically he can not stop crying... this is meltdown time 100 and I do not know how to help him... Socially and learning wise he is doing fine but I am concerned about him having these Episodes over little things on a regular basis

I would say that might well be looking at him through rose colored glasses.

Could he be considered a spirited child?

When such episodes occur either at home or in school he should be placed by himself for as long as it takes to calm down. It needn't be done in a punitive fashion, but rather is a supportive way that communicates how upsetting/disruptive it is to others to have all that noise around, and he can re-join others when he calm. This is aversion of time out that is mostly designed to help the child re-gaincomposure vs a punishment time out.
