7 y/o telling stories & tall tales

I am concerned about how to handle my 7 year old (boy) stepson. He seems to be going thru a stage of telling lies, but not anything malicious, just tall tales. Things like, "there was a huge 9 ft poisonous snake by the pond and it came up to me so I had to step on it & kill it ..."  Or that he saw a person in the backyard when I wasn't looking...a bee stung him on his leg (clearly just a bruise) etc, etc. Should I just go along with the stories (I've been replying "oh really, that's some story") or should I challenge their validity ("There are no 9 foot snakes in this area!!"). Is this just a stage, and is it typical for his age?

A lot of children tell" Whoppers" to get attention, you are handling it correctly, you could be interested and tell him you like his stories ,play it down and really let him tell them it seems harmless I know a few Dads who tell tall tales aswell its a way of seeking attention.
