troubled by dream

My 12 year old niece was very troubled by a dream she had. Here's the email she sent me.

"I had a weird dream last night and it was so jumpy and didn't make any sense and it scared me for some reason, so I was wondering if you knew what it meant?
Part 1:
I was near my pool, and my mom walked by me, then I saw something dark under the water and I was scared. A mermaid with very, very aqua-blue eyes and a pretty face came up and looked at me(stared in my eyes really, as a girl would to a person she loves) and didn't talk. I didn't recognize the face of the mermaid but it was really weird.
Part 2:
I was in my Dominic's (her least-favorite brother) room and the TV was on, I didn't watch it and had no clue what was on, I walked by it and hid behind it when I heard someone walking in the hallway. Brad (her favorite brother) walked into the room and asked me "Would you be okay if your cat had to live outside?" and then I didn't say anything, I think that's when I woke up.
This dream freaked me out a lot and I don't know what it means. What's it mean?"

She's really scared over this dream, I'm not sure why, but she wants to know what it means, and I'm afraid I can't help.

Even thought the figure in the water was originally dark and her mother passed by her; it turned out to be a beautiful mermaid with aqua green eyes filled with love. Maybe not the kind of love we expect but it was love all the same. The world is in short supply of it.
This generation is becoming very blurry regarding same sex relatiosnhips.  Dreaming or even thinking subconsciously about same sex relationships is normal.  I've had them but never acted on them. Not that there would be anything wrong with it if I did.

The violence and other issues I can't comment on but her dreams seem to be working out the details for her in a fairly positive way.  She has a wonderful imagination so I say bravo to her. Life handed her lemons and she's dreaming about lemonade.

The brother who asked her if she wanted her cat to live outside may be some residual trust issues; even though he's her favorite brother.  Trust is to be earned, not given.

Yeah, same niece. She has a lot of issues going on.
She has worked out a lot of the issues, ones with her violent brother, her father, and the violence towards other children. She just can't get over how her brother was to her.

Is this the same niece you wrote about last week with the huge behavioral issues?

It sounds like she needs counseling,  pup.

She told me about which brother was her favorite and least favorite.

Her least-favorite brother hits her a lot, and is very violent towards her. Her favorite brother is always there for her, and is kind to her.

puprock,   only she can interpret the dream and know what it means to her.

Of more interest is that the extended family knows who is her least and most favorite brother are.  Sad.
