Temperment in my 9year old

My son who is nine year old keep challenging his limits. He refuses to listen to the ordres given by his parents & recently he gone to the  extend to refuse his school principal when she give dettention of his misbehaviour. He was difficult through out his childhood never felt it neede any medical attention. But noe doubt about his temperment .Is he difficult child ? Do I need to take him for some therapy ?

My son was having a fight with his classmate & the got dettention to both boys . the other one accepted it & started behaving well.While my one first refused & acted like itdidn't concerned him.Through out his childhood it was difficult for me to get him done what he didn't like.Like he used go out to play with his friends everyevening but when it is time to come back home he will refuse & even after i wait long time he won't listen .Finally I had to force him back home. Other example there is reward system in the school for good behaviour but he was never care about those rewards. When I spoke to him about it he said other boys doing it because they wanted to be in the good list not bcz they are really good & when the teachers are not around they don't behave so good. And he is always with full energy. He is neverconcerned about food or rest , I always have to be in alert to make sure he is eating & sleeping at time. He has an younger brother of 3 yrs old with him he very nice & caring . It was his demand that he need a brother or sister which made us plan for another child.  
Again yesterday an incident happen that he had a fight with another child & he tried to poke him with pencil. His teacher says he can't controll his anger . but mostly this happen when another child prevoke him .

Is this new behavior or worsening, you mention he has always been a difficult child.  Some children are more "spirited" and definitely do not cower to authority like others.  What is exactly going on at the school.  We need more details.
