Uncontrollable noises

MSH
My eight year son has no control over noises which he makes throughout the day.  This has been going on for over one year and the pediatrician attributed it to mucus in the throat.  The noise sounds as a brief "hum" or "huh"; although it is not a loud noise it is noticable if you sit beside him while watching television.  My son states that he does this at school and throughout the day and has no control in making it stop.  His IQ is 138 and he has received the highest score in his second grade class.  My nephew is a paranoid schizophrenic and I was wondering if my son's uncontrollable behavior might be the beginning signs of PS.

Dear MSH,

No, there's no reason to worry that this behavior is an early sign of a psychotic disorder. The pediatrician may well have put his finger on the problem. Did he prescribe anything that might help clear up the problem? Most often, such gutteral noises are due to an underlying medical cause. Sometimes, though not often, they are a type of vocal tic and are thus manifestations of a tic disorder. Some children with Tourette Syndrome display this type of tic, but your son does not display a sufficient array of symptoms to warrant that diagnosis, for sure. Keep yur eye (or ear) on it, and check with your pediatrician if your son should see an allergist.

As a mom of a 6 year old with Bi-Polar, my son has developed a motor tic of "gasping" since he was placed on Adderal. I have learned that if there is an underlying tendency (no way for you to know) to have motor tics, some meds will bring them out. That's what this sounds like to me. My sons tic went away briefly and then came back. I have also been told that if it manifests itself into other "noises", "blinking", "jerking" later on, that it is probably Tourette's Syndrome. Either way, there are meds to help control it.
