Ugh, that's really hard when your two mental health specialists aren't in agreement.  I do not know a specialist.  What about asking your gp for a referral to someone?  My gp has certain doctors and psychologists they work with.  I will say that I personally trust a doctor more than a psychologist.  Psychologists do a lot to learn their field but it isn't medical school.  Let us know how it goes.  What kinds of symptoms are you having?  What does your psych say if they don't believe conversion disorder (which is a semi controversial diagnosis)?

Anyone know a specialist in Los Angeles?  My psychologist thinks I have Conversion Disorder, my psychiatrist disagrees.  Looking for a second opinion.

Wow, that's exactly what happens to my daughter. She's 13 and we've just this week been told that this is a probable diagnosis. Please let me know if this dr helps your son! We are so tired of seeing her suffer like this. It interrupts every part of life!

Your post was from 2008, how are you now?  Are you still having episodes? How severe were your episodes?  My son has also been diagnosed with conversion disorder and we are going to make an appointment with Dr. Pandya.  Hopefully this will help.  When my son has an episode his entire body becomes paralyzed but totally aware of what's going on around him.

Hello Laceyday.  I have been diagnosed with Conversion Disorder and I also live in Ohio.  I see Dr. Pandya at the Cleveland Clinic here in Cleveland, Ohio.  He knows about conversion disorder and I've found him to be great to work with.  Conversion Disorder is just a real hard thing to work through.  Patients and doctors/therapists have to be willing to work together.  I found that the Cleveland Clinic was the first place to take me seriously and actually talk to me all about Conversion Disorder until I felt more comfortable.  Most people have cast me off in 5 minutes and told me to go live life and I'd be happy eventually.  After 3 years of having disabling symptoms of it I got tired and came up here and have finally gotten some progress.  So I'd recommend the Cleveland Clinic...if it's too far you can call and maybe they can recommend a professional who is closer to your area.  The psychiatry dept number is 216-444-5812 for appointments.

Hope this helps!

I have a severe conversion disorder.  There is help.  First of all, you need three doctors.
Neurologist, Psychologist, and a good therapist.
There is also a Dr. John Speed at the University of Utah in the Physical Medicine department that is known nationally for his work in this area.  What he does is re-trains the brain.  It's amazing.  He is very good at what he does. He is able to help the majority of people who have this disorder.  Good luck, if you have any questions please write.

You could post this on the Ask an Expert Website-- the dr there can give you local recommendations if he has any. Good luck.
