How to improve dignity with special needs children?

Hi there I just had a quick question

I’m a 24 year old male and recently I’ve matured into adulthood and am beginning to take care of my body more. I realized that I need help brushing my teeth, wiping after I go to the bathroom, and cleaning my body when I shower. I used to avoid doing these things for years because my rebellious teenage self felt invincible but now I’m realizing how important it is to keep my body healthy and clean.

Even as I’ve started getting more help, I feel much more authentic and a lot more cleaner and happier. However I do feel like I’ve lost some of my modesty and dignity. As a parent with a child with a disability, have you discovered any methods that help them feel like they still have control? I apologize if this is the wrong section but I wanted some ideas that I could try with my helpers when they assist me.

Thank you so much for reading this!

Hey there, I'm sorry I'm just seeing this. I'm a mom of a son who has a developmental delay and daily tasks have always been difficult for him as well.  Especially personal grooming.  For me, I worked to help my son get more comfortable doing things for himself.  Things like buying things to make it easier like flushable wet wipes (sold where toilet paper is) help so that he can take care of the wiping well, showing him how hand over hand like how to shampoo his hair exactly and letting him work on it.  He got better at everything.  We got a water pick since he doesn't floss very well.  We have a really good mouth wash on hand that he uses after brushing his teeth to help. Rotating tooth brushes help.  I have done my best to show him how and he attempts and it doesn't go well some day, I may step in and help again but then he tries again the next.  :>)  You sound like you are doing great!  Proud of your desire to take care of yourself, good for you!
