If I am doing a HDL, LDL, VLDL and Tg blood test...

is including total cholesterol redundant?

Is adding a total chelostrol blood test to the 4 tests in the title unnecessary?

By unnecessary I mean redundant. If there is %1 benefit than I would consider it necessary, in this particular case.

Were you able to follow up with your doctor to see what he wanted you to do with this lab work?  I would imagine they would want total cholesterol numbers ran which is just averaging the others.  let me know.

Hello and welcome. Total cholesterol is an important number to know but is derived from the other results.  Won't your total cholesterol be given regardless and is not a separate test?  They get the number from factoring your other lipid numbers.  But as a basic question, yes. Knowing your total cholesterol is important and your doctor will likely chart this number.
