Hi. I have in fact received a very rapid reply from the company, but I need to consider its content more tomorrow (way too tired to interpret it properly right now). I think this deserves a special mention on the User Group forum, so I'll probably start a new thread titled 'BalanceIt Supplemented Dog Food' ... so please look out for it tomorrow.
Thanks again for letting us know about this company and its products.

That's reassuring about the vitamins and their insistence on veterinary approval before supplying. It sounds like they are being very diligent in their approach to things. I have actually sent them an email about their products and services, so if they reply, I'll post it here.

I used one of their standard canine ckd recipes which is free. Part of the formula is additional vitamins and minerals that they sell through their website. They wont sell the vitamins without authorization from your vet.
If you want different recipe or your pets condition is not already covered then you would have to pay for a new recipe.
If I remember correctly, the vitamins cost $50 but last a long time. For my 12lb dog at least 6 months.
Hi. I checked out the Balanceit website and it certainly looks interesting, though I imagine it's quite a costly exercise if they work with a vet to create a one-off recipe. Of course, it's a company out to make a profit, so I remain a little sceptical. For example, I am a little concerned that they still use dry foods, which are extremely unsuitable (despite all the promotional material from product suppliers and even some vets) for canine kidney disease. However, I guess, this is certainly a step in the right direction, for those that have concerns about creating their own homemade diets for their CKF dogs.

My dog was diagnosed with ckd almost 2 years ago. We tried all the prescription foods and my dog would rather starve. My vet found this place www.balanceit.com. they will work with your vet to develop a recipe and supplements for your dog. The company was started by vets from school of veterinary medicine at UC Davis. Buffy was happy with the food for a long time.
Hi. Sorry to hear about Blu's diagnosis. I am still researching kidney failure after 4 years, and still learning new things every day. It's why I started this User Group - and I hope you get some useful information and support from it.
Has your dog had any fluid therapy? This is ordinarily the first line of treatment and helps (sometimes) to get the numbers down to a level where they can be maintained. If Blu hasn't had fluid therapy, please talk to your vet about it. The phosphorus binder is helpful, the k/d diet is good (for now). You say his appetite comes and goes, so has the vet given an anti-nausea medication to improve that aspect of his care?
