drying of sputum

mucous get dried up and it causes breathing difficulty. What can be one as a first aid to reduce the problem.Can I take any drug to reduce this problem of drying mucous

one can take plenty of fluids. but regular use of a drug may bring in side effects?

drink plenty of fluids .... also there is a drug called mucinex , available from chemists , this thins the mucous , however, use with care , personally I would not recommend it but some get along with it just fine
