I trust that he is being cared for by doctors (hepatologists, etc.) at a liver transplant center?

These are the most knowledgeable and experienced doctors who care on a daily basis for patients with advanced liver disease suffering with the debilitating complications. They know how to stabilize patients and help them to get better.

They can get him physical therapy services to help him with his mobility. A person with advanced cirrhosis should try to maintain their health as much as possible despite their disease. Walking is vital to prevent muscular atrophy which can worsen the prognosis.

In a worse case scenario... they can guide the patient to getting listed for receiving a liver transplant should their liver disease get worse.

A FibroScan result of 13.8 kPa for a person with NAFLD means they have advanced liver disease (cirrhosis). They should see a specialist (a gastroenterologist (GI specialist) or hepatologist (a liver specialist)) to get treatment and learn how to manage his liver disease to prevent further damage to his liver. Without treatment his liver disease will only get worse or time.

NAFLD is now the second most common cause for people needing liver transplantation and is expected to become the number one cause for liver transplantation in the US in the coming years.

* Your father should talk to his primary doctor and get a referral to see a gastroenterologist or hepatologist and get treatment for his NAFLD
* Lose weight, if you are overweight or obese
* Lower his cholesterol and triglycerides
* Control his diabetes if he is diabetic
* Avoid alcohol which will further damage his liver

When the liver decompensates (decompensated cirrhosis), the liver has become too damaged to perform all of its normal functions, the person will have overt complications from their cirrhosis. Ascites, bleeding varices, Hepatic Encephalopathy (mental disorders), jaundice, and others as well. Some of these complications can be life-threatening.

NAFLD is manageable with treatment and much research is being done to learn more about this disease. The sooner one gets treatment, the better the odds that their liver disease can be managed.

Good luck to your father.
Thanks for writing.
