Hair loss and Cirrosis of liver

I was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver 2 years ago. I was informed that I am not eligible for a liver transplant. I do have ascites in which I receive parentheses treatment every few months. My skin and hair are extremely dry and my hair is falling out on a daily bases.  Has anyone experienced this issue and have any known remedies.  Would this be stress-related?

As far as your symptoms you should discuss with your doctor. Could be stress could be medication related. I was having some hair thinning while taking spironolactone for edema. I quit taking a couple of years ago and some of my Air seems to be returning.

What kind of doctor told you you aren’t eligible? Why are you not eligible is there nothing you can do to change this? Are you seeing a doctor associated with a liver transplant center? If you are not I strongly suggest you change providers to a hepatologist who is. They are best equipped to follow and advise patients like us with liver cirrhosis.

What was the cause of your cirrhosis. Can the cause be eridicated? If it can you can stop the progression of your liver damage. Mine was caused by Hepatitis c which was finally cured 3 years ago.

The only reasons I can think of (assuming you aren’t drinking) for not being eligible is being over 70 years old or having other serious health problems that would mean your odds of surviving a transplant surgery as being very poor. Or not being willing to undergo the procedure. Unless you mean you are not sick enough to qualify to be on the list. Do you know your MELD score? This is how we are ranked for liver transplant priority. You need a MELD score of usually 15 to be on the list with most patients receiving a transplant with a MELD of around 30.

Are you being monitored for liver cancer with at least blood testing including the AFP test which can be a liver cancer marker along with abdominal ultrasounds every 6 months? Have you had upper endoscopy to check for esophageal varicies? Have you been immunized against Hepatitis A and B? Have you had the pneumonia vaccine and been advised to get your flu shot every year as soon as it is available? These are all things my doctor has had me do.

I was diagnosed with cirrhosis January 2008. I was being followed closely because of my hep c having liver biopsies every 5 years so sometime between 2003 and 2008 I progressed from F3 to F4 cirrhosis.

Wishing you all the best
Lynn
