My sister has stage 4 cirrhosis with ascites, edema of the legs and feet, portal hypertension, and probably other complications. She is now diagnosed with CHF. She has been hospitalized for over a week now and they have been trying to get her edema under control because she has an arrhythmia in her heart due to the edema in her body. They cardio-converted her the other day, but the arrhythmia came back again. I assume they did an evaluation for a liver transplant, but I am not sure. If she is not eligible for a liver transplant, what would be some reasons other than the continued use of alcohol and cigarettes? I do believe she was smoking again after her diagnosis of ESLD over 5 yrs. ago. She may have started drinking again here and there, but I don't think it was a continued usage. Would they be able to pick up the recent nicotine usage during this recent hospitalization? She probably would never admit to it. Or is CHF now considered a co-morbidity that would disqualify her from a transplant? There are so many conditions now due to the liver failure. Even kidney problems. She is very weak, and I don't see how she will recover much unless the edema can be more controlled. We are worried and I think with good reason. Without a transplant, her quality of life is not going to be there.
