Tomatoes can thin the blood. If your platelets are really low you should not eat an excess of tomatoes or sauce.

Hi bluebird welcome back! Strawberries and Blueberries are very rich in antioxidants which assist the liver in riding the body of toxins that build-up due to our compromised liver function. Antioxidants not only help the liver carry out its cleansing processes, but they also serve to protect the liver from excessive free radical damage.
“The high levels of antioxidants in a high quality green food are the front line of defense in the war on destructive free radicals that will destroy cells ability to repair, renew, and rejuvenate.
• Fruits and vegetables contain a wide variety of nutrients, including antioxidants, phytochemicals, and carotenoids, that can be beneficial to both general health and liver health.
• Spinach, tomatoes, and beets contain antioxidants, B vitamins, and carotenoids that enhance the efficiency of Phase I detoxification.
• The antioxidant activity of beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium is also recommended. Improving your diet and exercise is a DEFINITE must for long-term health.
Conclusion
Maintaining liver health is integral to healthy living. It is essential for body maintenance and regeneration. Liver health is the result of a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and supplementing with at least the antioxidant nutrients to decrease the toxic burden the liver has to deal with each day. Since the liver is the chief detoxification organ in the body, maintaining liver health is very important for everyone. Maintaining liver health is integral to healthy living. It is essential for body maintenance and regeneration.”
As with any part of our diet all foods should be consumed in moderation, too much of any one targeted thing could turn what’s beneficial into something destructive. Variety plays an important role. Sorry for the recent situation you have been going through but it’s time to start being a good girl again, get rid of the sodas and goodies! :)
“What are the signs that my cirrhosis is getting worse.”
Blood labs should be drawn every three months for persons with cirrhosis, they will provide the first indication that further testing or treatment is needed although they can’t always identify the development of HCC (liver cancer). Ultra sound is normal ran every 6 months to observe any abnormalities that have developed on the liver at which point more advanced imaging may be required.

We have all been so happy for Howie too, he is so well deserving and the last I heard recovery is going good. A wonderful inspiration to us all. Take care Blue and I hope this will help.

Randy

Although the tomatoes should be fine, if he has decompensated cirrhosis he will need to avoid salt which means avoiding cheese and most breads.
He should read labels. Most fruit and veggies are okay although those high in iron need to be avoided IF his cirrhosis is decompensated.

Being Italian, your friend has a lot of options for a good diet. Pasta with zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms etc. Good rustic sourdoughs etc with olive oil and dry cheeses. a good minestrone.
When you are sick, your body, depending on your relationship with it, tells you what you can and can't eat. I strangely now can eat canned tomatoes, but still struggle with fresh. If I cook the tomato, I can ingest it without pain. (I have an hiatus hernia, which doesn't help with some foods).
But my diet wasn't formulated around my liver per se, it was formulated around all the other health issues related to HCV that I developed, and how I felt when eating food.

I was, in fact, being "serious".
In fact, I have "progressive irreversible liver disease"

Increased intestinal permeability has been found to be
a factor in liver diseases, such as cirrhosis.
There is no single cause of leaky gut syndrome, but some of the most common
are chronic stress, dysbiosis, environmental contaminants, gastrointestinal
disease, immune overload, overuse of alcoholic beverages, poor food choices,
presence of pathogenic bacteria, parasites and yeasts, and prolonged use of
NSAIDs.

Salicylates competitively inhibit Vit K dependent synthesis of factors II, VII, IX & X → ↑INR.
Tomatoes contain salicylates, although I doubt very much that unless you consumed extremely stupidly large amounts or had a severe sensitivity or allergy to salicylates or NSAIDS, they would not be a problem. However there is research evidence to suggest those with cirrhosis have an increased risk of developing sensitivites to certain enzymes such as gliadin, suphates & salicylates. My reference to viral replication was to those with cirrhosis from hepatitis B & C. Although the same immune compromised state can occur with any type of cirrhosis or serious liver damage

CONCLUSION "Alterations to intestinal microbiota seems to play important roles in the induction and promotion of liver damage progression and in the development and severity of NASH.Bacterial overgrowth, immune dis-function, alteration of the luminal factors and increased intestinal permeability, are all involved in the pathogenesis of NASH and its consequences, including progression to cirrhosis, infections, hepatic encephaly, SBP and renal failure."

Advanced stage cirrhosis has nothing to do with "immune like sensitivities", "virus's replication", small intestine, "leaky gut", etc. We are talking about cirrhosis of the liver.

People with advanced cirrhosis are suffering with progressive irreversible liver disease and its complications which can be fatal. Without a liver transplant these people will die. Please respect the serious of what these people are going suffering through.

Please stay on the topic of this community, cirrhosis, and address the poster's question if you have something to contribute.

Cheers

The lowest amount of salictyes is in Roma tomatoes. Some peeps may develop immune like sensitivities to certain food enzymes with advanced liver disease due to the autoimmune reactions of the virus's replication.
In a normal body that has the correct levels of sulphates and liver enzymes, phenols and salicylates are easily metabolized.  The body utilizes what it needs from the chemicals and properly disposes of the rest through the bowels.  In those whose levels are not normal or in the case of “leaky gut syndrome”, intolerance to this chemical family can occur rather quickly.

Many people with gut issues such as yeast/bacteria overgrowth or digestive diseases can develop salicylate intolerance as a result of “leaky gut” syndrome.  Leaky gut is a result of various digestive problems and occurs when the small intestine becomes too damaged to properly filter the size and types of food particles or chemicals that enter the bloodstream (for more on leaky gut read this).  When these improper particles are allowed to repeatedly enter the blood stream the body tries to get rid of them by triggering an immune system response.  Because phenols/salicylates are so common in most foods, a person with a leaky gut will have much higher than normal levels of these chemicals in their blood and can very quickly develop intolerance’s to these specific particles.
Salicylate intolerance research goes back many decades, and many books have been written. In 1984 in Australia it was shown to be linked to the enzymes delta-5 and delta-6 desaturase, and when it damages them it causes symptoms. However to get there the liver has to fail detox, and the gut, and you have to have limited desaturase capacity. Insufficient reduced glutathione is implicated here.

There is no association between the eating of tomatoes and liver disease.
Why do you ask?
