Post viral cough

I have had a cough for three weeks now. It started off dry and tickly, then I got a terrible cold for a week, and now I am just left with the cough. It is the most severe cough I have ever had, and is worse in the evening and when I lie down. It isn't productive and the nurse at the walk in clinic said my chest was clear so sent me away with nothing. It is getting worse every day and I am exhausted. The nurse said it must be viral and that it is everywhere at the moment so just to wait it out. When I have the coughing fits I lose my breath and sound like a chronic smoker - when I have never smoked In my life. I am very stressed at the moment so my immune system is probably not at it's best. At a complete loss. Is it true - there is nothing that can be done to help me? I'm thinking that I didn't explain to the nurse exactly how bad this is - especially on an evening.

The dry cough has subsided somewhat and turned into a mucus cough, mucus at back of throat, sore throat and earache. Been going on for a month now.

You no doubt have one of the viruses that are making the rounds this year. My 47 year old son had it for about three weeks. Just keep yourself hydrated with lots of WATER, gargle with salt water to keep your throat and mouth moist, and tough it out. If you are running a fever of 101 or more at any time, take tylenol every four hours and get lots of rest. You are probably not contagious any longer.
