Digestive issues/diarrhea due to Coronavirus

So it seems like one of the early symptoms of Coronavirus is digestive issues, mainly diarrhea, as per a few articles that came out today:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-digestive-symptoms-diarrhea-almost-half-of-patients/

I wanted to share this because about a month ago, I started to experience daily digestive issues and the main symptom was diarrhea. At first I thought it was something I ate, then I thought it was my medication no working due (I am a chronic hepatitis B patient) because when I was dealing with that virus when it became active, it was similar symptoms. Lack of appetite, odd fatigue & weird sleep patterns, weight loss and muscle wasting, diarrhea, etc.

Anyway, I was going on for a month like this and that is how I felt, that some virus was attacking my system. It eventually slowed down to almost nothing today and this past week, and everything is sort of going back to normal (I do have a cough that has been around for a week, and a stuffed up nose, but these too are subsiding).

Anyway, I wanted to share this because all tests I took, nothing was able to be found with me. And it seems like this may be what I had... though doctor refused to give me a test because I was not presenting with chills & fever. I wanted to make everyone aware as it seems like the common symptoms are not the only ones. I'm planning to make a full recover at this time, within the next week.

I can answer how it was for me when I got covid which I had a month and a week ago. I'm still recovering. But had all the classic symptoms and some new ones I had : elevated heart rate, chills for 2 days, fever for 3 days, headache, brain fog, lethargic constantly took naps half the day in the first 2 weeks, diarrhea, weird leg stabbing pains, muscle aches, lack of appetite, weird chest pains and a bit of breathlessness from elevated heart rate. My elevated heart rate just now is adjusting back to normal.

The diarrhea was pretty intense the first 2 weeks it was like hourly in the early days it felt like. I would even wake up and just **** my brains out it was crazy. But I cleaned up my diet I was not having any coffee at the time and was almost on a liquid diet at the early stages cause my appetite was almost gone. I definitely got my appetite back now but it was a struggle to eat food at first. I also have celiac disease and colitis so I don't eat gluten and you can still get diarrhea from eating dairy and other food-related allergies/ issues. So, I'm almost back to normal now coming off some beta blockers they put me on to treat my heart rate which gave me more diarrhea. Just take probiotics with your meals that can help too and drink lots of electrolytes, coconut water is good or alkaline water.

I was reading an article today in the Daily Mail, from June 1st this year (2022) It was basically about 'lockdown dogs', but the journalist briefly mentioned that her child caught Covid during lockdown in Britain 2020, and presented with 'stomach flu'-like symptoms.
No other details were added, as that would have been off-topic to the article. I am sorry, I can't remember the journalist's name.

This is weird. Just before I caught Covid in early 2020 my perfect digestion suddenly fell apart and I got loose bowel movements which I'd never had. This came and went over 2 weeks, then the classic "Covid" hit. During that (fever, chest tightness, heart issues, weakness, breathing difficulties etc) -my gut was fine!

But after I'd "recovered" from Covid, about 6 weeks later I got IBS-D. Occasionally that "D" alternated with a day or two of constipation, but was basically loose stool (NO 5 at best on the Bristol chart) Sometimes I was perfectly normal! Sometimes for days or weeks!
I also got awful weariness and exhaustion.

My gut is still not right, 2 years later. But I am better than I was in 2020. I am almost used to it now, and usually can manage it moderately well so long as I listen to what my gut and body are up to, and eat accordingly. But I can no longer eat certain foods (fiber-rich) root vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, lentils, beans, brown rice, wholemeal bread, and a lot of fruits etc. I can occasionally have a little bit of the above when I am going through a normal period.

The flare ups happen with no rhyme or reason. I went on the low Fodmap diet which has helped. I hate diets, but had to try something. Giving up gluten as a 6 week experiment was no help at all, so I eat gluten again in moderation now.

As soon as I started to treat it like IBS (as my doctor suggested it might be) I felt I did have a bit of a handle on it. But like you, no tests showed up anything at all. Not even the slightest inflammation in the gut! No red flags in bloodwork either.

Usually you don't have sinus issues with Covid19. So it may be related to food or your Hepatitis. If you don't get worse you should be okay.

Interesting article about this 204 patient study. "Seven of the patients in the study had digestive symptoms but no respiratory symptoms." so I wonder why they even tested them to discover they had Covid.
