Side Effects of 6 M-P in Treating Crohn's Disease

I am fifteen years old and have been having complications with my GI tract. The entire span of this illness has been about six weeks, so I caught it very early, and hopefully nipped it in the butt. But I was misdiagnosed with infectious colitis and put on antibiotics for a week, which temporarily subsided the discomfort. However, the symptoms came right back and I had to be removed from school. I couldn't eat and lost 20 pounds in a few weeks. I had every test you could imagine preformed multiple times and visited the doctor usually at least two times a week. Finally, I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy, and was scheduled to leave the hospital after the procedure, but it was so severe they admitted me for three days so receive IV steroids and Protonix. Since leaving the hospital above two weeks ago I have been taking 500mg of Flagyl twice a day, 20mg of Prilosec one a day, and 20 mg of Prednisone twice a day, along with my regular ADHD/OCD meds and some vitamins. However, my doctor wants to start a maintenance medication so I can come off of all the other meds. He wants to put me on 6 M-P but I am concerned about a weakened immune system. weight loss/gain, hair loss, and any other side effect. Do you or anyone you know take this medicine and what has it done for them? Any advice or personal stories would help!

Hi Hailey, I have a daughter who is 14 who has a similar story like yours (very similar) and I was wondering: It says that your comment was written in June so it has been a couple months and Im curious... Does 6 MP cause hair loss? It is not one of the listed side effects... did you lose or gain weight? How did you feel on it? Is there anything else worth knowing? How many milligrams did you take? (My daughter also takes flagyl, pentasa (she was on prednisone for about a month, amitriptalyine, VSL3, omerphazoyle, Endocourt,Prilosec, she takes over 16 pills everyday on a regular basis and they are going to try to move her to 6MP because nothing is working and if that doesn't work, REMICADE :( I'm really worried about her and I just want to hear from someone who has experienced this drug? Does it work for you? If you can get back to me ASAP... that would be helpful... she just had blood drawn today for genetic testing for the drug. Thanks :)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
I am sorry to hear about your medical problems. 6-MP is started if other medications do not help in the treatment of Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. So, ask your doctor whether some other medication can be used instead of this. The pros and cons of this medication need to be weighed against the pros and cons of having uncontrolled symptoms of Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. Please discuss with your doctor. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.
