As a Korean American living in South Korea, there is NOTHING going on.
CNN talks all this bs about the danger but it s all chill here.
I wonder y the media make things worst.

On CNN last night they interviewed several journalists and other folks who had spent time there over the years.  Included in that was Laura Ling, the journalist who was held there recently.  They all said the same thing...the North Korean people have literally been brainwashed since birth.  In the actual homes are speakers that wake everyone up in the morning with propoganda and end the day the same way.  They have been taught that Kim Jong Il was a God...told he walked at 3 weeks of age and other nonsense.  Being that no outside influences are allowed...ie" news sources, etc. they just don't know any differently.  Crazy huh.  So most of the folks interviewed think the tears probably were real...their "God" is dead.  Can you imagine living that way...brought up like that with no idea whatsoever what the outside world was like.  They gave one example...a women who was blind due to cataracts received surgery allowing her to see again.  Instead of thanking the surgeons, etc., she immediately went to a picture of Kim Jong Il thanking him for restoring her eyesight.  These people are just completely and utterly brainwashed.

One of the bits I saw yesterday from Korea were some people literally crying their eyes out, but the streets where the cameras found these individuals were completely empty.... just nobody around.  That struck me as odd, or at least strange.  The areas looked to be pretty much metropolitan but were completely void of people.

A friend said something that makes a little sense.  #1.  The crying was staged.  #2.  The crying could have been genuine and points to the concerns of some of the people in the country... not knowing where they are headed.

This will probably get interesting.

Oh yes, it is very much a dictatorship.  It's a bizarre country though (I've not been there, but from what I have read and heard) in that apparantly the man quite literally had or has them brainwashed.  I think many there seem to think he is some sort of God or something.  It could also be that they shed tears because they are afraid not to.  Or the images of people crying are only what their internal media will release to the rest of the world.  Who knows..but it is a bizarre situation.

I understand he has spent the last year in the grooming process, but he is sooo young! I think the whole situation is scarey. One thing Im not understanding tho. Were they not under a dictatorship? All the tears of his death have me stumped to some degree!

There was so much about this on our news this morning...highlighting some of the crazy things Kim Jong Il did during his reign.  It seems that many "experts" think his kid is going to be significantly worse then daddy.  I think that's another country where we are going to see things get seriously seriously bad in the next few years.  Time will tell I guess, but predictions aren't good.
