Pink Eye only Symptom before child died

Hi, I was looking at something else, came across this story of the death of a small boy in his sleep.   The only symptom he had was pink eye.  He had the enterovirus

Just found this, it seems that people need to aware or vigilant when their children get sick.  I guess for now it is a good idea not to assume that a child with a cold is just a cold.  One Mom said she could hear her son gasping for breath from across the room so it does seem like it is much worse than a cold.  Some schools are now sending out informational bulletins when a child is diagnosed.

I found this about another little boy, a friend of this boy who died two weeks ago.  The CDC is now saying that pink eye didn't have anything to do with what killed the little boy.  I wish I could change the title, I got it from the news.
Sorry about that.  I should not have panicked.

I lose for parent of the year...  My kids have been exposed to some real nasty stuff....  My eldest is never ill, my youngest seems to catch most things coming down the road.  They both went to the same daycare my wife helped run.  Exposed to the same things.....

It seems as if I am predisposed to most respiratory issues... except flu.  I also used to get multiple ear infections when I moved to this elevation.  My youngest is that guy now.

We all have had the same doctor who is not big on prescribing antibiotics and I am glad for it.  On the other end, I think my kids will be better off.  Our doc is big on vaccinations but not big on the flu or chicken pox shots, unless you are aged.  Im old, but not aged.

As babies go through the birth canal, they pick up good bacteria that help them fight certain diseases and with all the C-sections, and shielding children from dirt and other ways of getting "dirty" they miss out on a lot that children of, say, my generation and those before got all the time.

And yes, the hand sanitizers wipe out good bacteria and are not as good as soap and water.

they aren't exposed to all the good bacteria they need to keep them healthy.

Good point and they say those hand sanitizers are a bad thing too and do nothing compared to good old soap and water....

I'm currently reading a book called the "Missing Microbes" that goes into some detail about what's happened because doctors have prescribed antibiotics when they aren't needed.

The antibiotics have killed off the "good" bugs that help fight off the bad ones, plus with so many C-sections and the way kids are raised today, they aren't exposed to all the good bacteria they need to keep them healthy. Each generation loses some of the bacteria they need so these viruses keep getting stronger and stronger.  It's a really interesting book and when I look at what's going on, with Ebola, MRSA, CDIF, I certainly can't argue with the author.

I just found this, I hope it helps someone, 6 things all parents should know about the enterovirus.  MRSA is awful, so is CDIF. both used to only occur in hospital settings.

This is probably the fruit of which my doctor would NOT prescribe antibiotics unless it was necessary.  So many docs just fill a prescription for colds and these stupid bugs just get more and more resistant.

I have a buddy who is dealing with MERSA....  lots of fun he is having.

It IS a scary time for parents for sure. They are saying that this virus is nothing new, nothing that hasnt been around before, but is stronger than usual...Im not sure of anything because it seems there are mixed messages. And it is not unusual for there to be deaths in someone who has something else going on. And I am happy to see they are covering it more, unfortunately tho only after the death of this child. As usual, more questions than answers forthcoming. Im just glad mine are all grown, but am concerned about my grandchilden, especially those who have asthma.

I guess this kind was undersized and maybe had some other issues that he was born with. So I can only assume that played a role in his death. Sad to hear and scared to hear as I have a 5 and 7 year old.

I want to hear most about this 4 year old, as there had to be some kind of underlying condition that caused this.

I am happy to hear about the doctor, really said about Duncan.
I hope he makes it.
Thanks again for sharing.

When the little girl next door got pink eye, it started over the weekend, she was pretty sick by the time they could get her to a doctor and start medication.  She had congestion on top of the pink eye, felt really sick..
I didn't get too close because it is highly contagious, it almost looked like she had a black eye.  She was in quite a bit of pain.

Take care

I just heard the doctor tested negative for ebola, but they did not say anything other than that about him. Duncan tho in Texas, was downgraded to critical and his fam says he is on Dialysis and Respirator. Not looking so good for him. And he has recd no experimental med like the others did.

I found it posted under R Glass's post

"Who knows? It is a possibility the respiratory infection and Pink Eye problem could have been caused by the experimental treatment. This is one of the reasons it takes so long for drugs to be approved. They have to go through several trials to not only make sure it works but it is safe to take. It may just be a coincidence but I do find that his symptoms strange for someone that hasn’t been out of the hospital for very long. I also find it strange that he has a respiratory infection and Pink Eye. I’ve had Pink Eye a couple of times but never had a cough with it. Time will soon tell.

“Dr. Richard Sacra was hospitalized Saturday for observation and is in stable condition with a cough and conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye.”

http://nypost.com/2014/10/05/american-doctor-cured-of-ebola-back-in-the-hospital/

I just heard that the New Treatment is very promising and is being “Fast Tracked”. The bad news is, they said even being Fast Tracked it will take about a year before it will be released.

I’m not in “panic mode” but I do find it strange that they are trying so hard to keep people from panicking. It seemed like they were trying to get people to panic over The Swine Flu and the West Nile Virus."

I saw that another member on here had mentioned that it was thought the doctor had pneumonia and pink eye.  Sorry I should be more careful :)
I will try to find it
I am also thinking out loud so no worries :)

The doctor that they re admitted had pink eye? I did no he had presented with respiratory symptoms but somehow missed the pink eye. Coincidence? Oh my!  Im assuming that ebola has mutated or is symptomatic from the cure that was not tested that they gave him....And ya know? If these meds were never tested on humans and these folks are walking around in the public arena around others, do we really know what to expect?  And to date, do we really know if it cures anything or just suppresses its levels, sort of like hiv. Im thinking out loud is all, so dont take anything Im saying as any kind of truths. lol

It is very sad. I normally don't post anything in CE but this story broke my heart for this family.  Looking at the stories from CA earlier in the year, then CO this week, that you pointed out, I am afraid for the school age children, in this case even pre-school age.  I wonder if he had a older sibling or if he was in day care.

Another thing that caught my eye (no pun) was the fact that he only had pink eye.  Isn't that what the doctor has who was recently re-admitted into hospital after being "cured" from Ebola?
It is probably just a coincidence however it is concerning.

I agree it is so sad!  And mystery illnesses in which it is a surprise that a child is so sick are frightening.  I too hope that they figure it out------  and that we are given more information on this.  Poor kid!!

This little boy was the youngest of three triplets, leaving behind 2 sisters. He went to sleep and didnt wake up. How utterly sad this is. Whatever this is, they need to get a handle on it. Where did it come from, what causes it, and for gods sake, how do we stop it! Very concerning. And in the wake of the ebola, its really not getting the coverage it should imo.

As I am reading the article from today, there are already over 800 comments at 6AM.  This one struck me.  Is this person right?  In one article I read that the amount of children coming across the border had gone up 100% since the beginning of the year.

“Legal immigrants are required to pay for medical exams and screening tests conducted by approved physicians before they arrive here. They’re not arriving in the U.S. carrying diseases, and then being dispersed into cities across the nation.”

The CDC acknowledges this very fact on their website. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention... the CDC’s own guidelines are clearly being violated with regards to the illegal immigrants currently crossing the border.
