Padded bikini bra for 7 and 8 year olds?

3/26/11

File this under unsurprising: Abercrombie & Fitch, of all wholesome places, now purveys padded bikini tops for 8-year-old girls.

ABC News took a look at the latest in tween swimwear, which had Babble.com bloggers up in arms, writing, "The push up bra is, effectively, a sex tool, designed to push the breasts up and out, putting them front and center where they're more accessible to the eye (and everything else). How is this okay for a second-grader?"

However, Abercrombie isn't the first to be under fire for selling such things. Last year, British department store Primark pulled padded bikini tops for girls aged 7 from its shelves after complaints from child protection groups. The UK chain donated all money made from sales to charity.

What do you think?

Have you heard of the "Breastfeeding" doll that's coming out for little girls? I shudder to think what these people will come up with next to make our little girls grow up too fast!
I think they are both horrible ideas.

I meant to vote "horrible" not "harmless". Having said that, the all girl store "justice" has been selling these for a long time. I don't have any daughters but I cannot imagine putting my young child in a two piece in the first place. Too many perverts out there.

i also don't watch Dr. Phil often, but saw that episode.  Isn't it awful?  Why do we want to teach our kids that how they look is more important then who they are.  An entire generation of children who may always suffer from low self esteem.  It's so sad isn't it.  I can't imagine letting my child get that kind of surgery unless it was for something disfiguring.  How awful.

I think this is terrible and as many of you said...many parents support this type of thing.  If people weren't buying them, they wouldn't be making them.

I can count on 1 hand how many times I have watch Dr. Phil, but one night recently, I was channel surfing.  It was really late and they were playing a Dr. Phil episode.  It was about moms who were allowing their minor daughters to get plastic surgery.  Most were getting boob jobs.  The moms wanted them too.  There was one girl who was 18.  Her mom wanted her to get a boob job, a nose job and I don't know how many more procedures done.  I felt so sorry for her.  Her own mother was sending her the message that she wasn't good enough.  This girl was very pretty.  And who cares if she wasn't?  What kind of message does it send a child when their own mother is criticizing their looks??  There was another girl who was 18 and getting a boob job.  She died during the procedure because she had a bad reaction to the anesthesia.

It's just terrible.  Really sad.  Kids are so vain but so are many adults!

I have three girls and one happens to be 8.  I cannot even find dress shoes that are not heels for her.  It is so sad this little girls in one inch heels, it can't be good for growing feet.  I want and wanted all my girls to look young for as long as possible, they grow up too fast!!  Just like putting 6th graders into middle school.. what is the rush???  Let em be kids for a little while longer they have forever to be adults and it isn't that great

Ugh, the beauty pagents.  It's just not natural for a little kid to be expected to hold still that long for hair, makeup and false eyelashes for cripes sake.  Moms who are trying to become stars through their kids.  Look at Lindsay Lohans mom...out partying and living on the coattails of her young daughter..and we wonder why Lindsay has so many problems?  It's just awful...attend a young kids sporting event and look at the way some of these parents behave.  So much for kids having fun.  And then we all wonder why so many of our youth have so many problems....not to tough to figure out.  Where are the parents?  Some of them are the ones pushing their kids so hard to be beautiful and glamourous at 5, or the star of their hockey team at 7.  We just need to let them be children, have fun, play for fun and feel good about themselves whether they are the most "beautiful" or the "best player" or not.

Yeah, adgal is on the money with that.  Another thing that comes to light is beauty pageants with young children.  I do not get that.... I won't get that.... All I can think of is Jon Benet Ramsey, the little pageant queen murdered in Colorado.

The ridiculous loops of her in make up, hair done, etc. replaying in my mind just gives me chills.  It seems as if nobody is aware of what they are putting their children through, and that they are subjecting their kids to this stuff.

yFor starters, a campaign needs started to boycot ambercombie and secondly, do they actually think they have a market for this sort of thing? I say evidently they do? And how worrisome is that! What is our world coming to! I also agree with adgal in that the role models for our children are not all that and why are they still role models. Where are the parents? Why are we allowing this? Disgusting! Remember the thongs for tots? Yep same company started that too.

You know, I was thinking about this tonight, and although I still find it absolutely disgusting, it's really not surprising.  Look at who we are putting forward as role models now?  They young stars that are behaving like adults (very badly behaved adults).  10 year olds and younger...heck, 4 year olds... being made up like grown women and paraded around....with the encouragement of their parents.  Not surprising.  It's really sad though isn't it.  The closest these little girls should get to all of that is playing dress up for fun in mommies closet.

This is not only disgusting but scary and dangerous, in my opinion. I'm afraid this will only exploit children evern more by sexualizing them and taking away their childish innocence. And we wonder why child porn has gotten worse and worse?
Who is going to protect our children anymore? They are being thrown to the wolves more and more. :(

The world is full of enough perverts as it is, and worse than that, there are some parents that probably think a padded bra would be a great thing for their daughter...... why would any parent think something like this product would be a good idea?

Disgust isn't even the right word....

Yee God.  Yet another attempt to sexualize our children before their time.  What kind of message does this send?  That your body isn't good enough on it's own.  There is more then enough to make young people, especially our girls feel less then confident based on the way they look.  Why can't we just let our kids be kids.  That kind of pressure will come soon enough.  This disgusts me.
