Thank you scottma. I WAS having a severe allergic reaction to the lining material. By the time I went back to the dentist 5 days after the initial placement of the dentures I was so sick that I could barely function. I would wake up several times during the night gagging on the taste and smell of strong plastic and my tongue burned where it touched the palate. My throat was sore and my sinuses around my eye sockets were so painful that it hurt to wash my face. There was constant nausea and malaise. I felt as if I was coming down with the flu.
The dentist removed the lining material about 3:00 PM and within a few hours the symptoms began to reside. The immediate dentures were so loose, with the lining removed, that they were painful where they touched the extraction sites. The dentist said NOT to use one of the denture creams because of the stitches. Instead, he suggested over-the-counter Seabond which works well. It's not as comfortable as the lining was, but certainly acceptable.
I'm convinced the excessive swelling was due to an allergic reaction to the material that was used. As of today, the symptoms are resolved. Tongue is not stinging, throat is not sore, sinuses are not painful and the nausea is gone.
Your descriptions do'nt suggest allergic reaction. Immediate denture almost always needs chairside relining. The relining material may contain residual monomerand continue to release for 24-72 hours.Frequent relining is essential. You may request your dentist to choose different reling material.After6 months to 12 months, you may need to get a final denture.
This needs to be addressed with your dentist to determine that nothing else is going on. Your dentures were put in over fresh wounds fron the extraction of the teeth, and if your face is swelling you need to make sure there is no infection. If this is an allergic reaction, he is your best source for alternatives.
