bottom jaw pain

7 years ago I was eating and bit down on my right side. A RADIATING pain shot through my jaw. I went to the dentist and had an x-ray taken.  I was informed I had a "cementoma" and that it should not be causing me pain.  Long story kind of short visit after visit after root canal after surgically removal of "stubby tooth" after wisdom teeth removal I am STILL having pain.  The area under my jaw bone where the tooth used to be feels swollen and throbs pretty constantly unless I take ibuprofen. Also when I "probe" the area with my tongue I feel something hard(i'm assuming the cementoma)and experience "EXTREME" pain. Also, when I've bent over and stood back up I will experience the same pain. My "stubby tooth" surgery involved removal of most of the cementoma but my oral surgeon refused to remove all because he said it was into my jaw and it sat right on top of a main nerve that could cause paralysis if he wen't any further.  I declined bioposy because he said it didn't appear malignant and cementoma's are mostly benign. He now suggests the pain is due to nerves that possibly were associated with the tooth but not corrected during the root canal.  Any ideas/suggestions? Also, would a CT scan show malignancy? Thank you so much!

you cannot feel a cementoma with your tongue. it does not sound like a malignancy either- although a scan or panoramic xray will rule that out.  if your pain started with trauma, it may be TMJ?? I'd suggest you get another opinion.

There is too much going on here for me to give you an opinion. I would think that anytime something is removed from your mouth or jaw that a biopsy would be considered. Ask your oral surgeon if he feels that a ct scan is necessary.
