Why do I have pain in a tooth?

I got a filling two months ago and they said the pain would go away within a week. Well the pain never went away. It still hurts and sometimes I can't eat on it. I would describe the pain as a sharp shooting pain going up and down my tooth. Could it be the dentist struck a nerve? What should I do?

If the pain is provoked by biting, it may be related to occlusal interference of new restoration. If the pain is spontaneous, it may be caused by caries or pulpal pathology. You may need to see an endodontist to evaluate pulp state.
