Dentist cut my gums....will it grow back?

I have a front tooth crown that I recently decided to replace.  As I was being prepped for my temporary, my dentist mentioned cutting away part of my gum, since it did not match the other teeth and had not receded.  It was only partially lower than my other gums, but I agreed since she mentioned she has done it before.  After i received my temporary, I looked in the mirror and was horrified to see that now my gum is much higher on that tooth.  she said it was irritated and needed to heal and would go back down, but I'm now doubting her.  Is this the case?  It would need to come down a bit to match the other teeth.
