Does peridontitis cause a high ESR level on blood work?

I have periodontitis and am undergoing the deep cleaning with my hygenist. I also had routine blood work done at my primary doctor and results showed a higher than normal ESR. I understand that this is a test that will indicate inflammation or infection in the body. Could the gum disease affect this result?  Causing it to high? My pockets in certain areas are 6 with loose teeth, swollen and tender gums and a small amount of blood when brushing and flossing.
