Onlay pain

1 week ago I had a crown replaced on 31, and an old silver filling on 29 replaced with an onlay. Once the numbing wore off, I had level 8 pain, plus pressure, under the onlay, when back to dentist on emergency basis the next morning. He prescribed ibuprofen 800 mg every 8 hours, and I can take 2 tylenol every 4 hours between those doses. Pain persists. The ibuprofen is the only thing that helps bring it down to level 4 pain. If I don't take it before bed time, I wake up with level 10 pain and it takes about an hour for it to calm down. Called office today, they said it can take 1-2 weeks, have an appointment to go back in another week if needed. Have had extractions, implants, root canals, crowns, and have never had pain of this type or duration. Anyone else had this type of experience? Or any suggestions?
