Teeth loss result in jaw bone loss

I lost 2 teeth over 10 years ago and have heard when teeth are missing the jaw will start to lose bone,does the whole of the upper and lower jaw start to lose bone or just the area were the teeth are missing?

Not only it causes bone loss but also cause overeruption.
