What do you think is wrong with my mouth/gums?

Hello,

I'm a 31 year old male in good overall health. Approximately, three days ago I started experiencing swollen gums and some bleeding while brushing (I had my wisdom teeth out as a teen).

Yesterday morning I experienced sensitivity to cold and hot food and beverages.  The sensitivity progressed during the day. I started to experience extreme dental pain by night time.  I tried to eat soup for dinner and it  causeed extreme stabbing pain. I can't pin point it to a tooth, just one side of my mouth/jaw.  I couldn't sleep at all. The pain was so extreme it brought tears, and I can usually have an very high pain tolerance.

I thought I may need a root canal so, I left work today and went to see the dentist.  The dentist started with a bite  test and could not identify a tooth causing the pain. He said it could be sinus/stress.  He then gave me cold water and asked me to move it to the side of mouth causing pain, and It caused imense pain. He then believed I needed a root canal but not yet.  His analogy was I'm at exit 7 (Central New Jersey) and the root canal is in New York City. He perscribed two different pain meds and an antibiotic.

I'm still in a lot of pain, that is mostly in the upper left gum near back molar but sometimes is worse in lower gum.  No specific tooth hurts but then pain is still so extreme I can't sleep. What do you think is going on?
