White on back of tongue

For several years I have had white stuff on the back of my tongue. It scrapes off and doesn’t cause any pain but I’ve noticed that the stuff I scrape off doesn’t smell very good. I brush my teeth and tongue twice daily and it doesn’t seem to help my breath or make the white stuff go away. I usually chew gum during the day to freshen my breath. I used to smoke cigarettes but I quit a couple months ago and that hasn’t helped either.

Smoking or other oral tobacco use is one possible cause.
However, you should see your doctor to rule out oral thrush.
