My pharmacist said citalopram can make some people feel worse if they are on too low of a dose. I never had that problem and it worked great for me, so don't take anyone's advice if they tell you this drug or any other one doesn't work. It is trial and error and your trial means taking the recommended dosage for 4 weeks minimum and communicating with your doc or pharmacist along the way if the reaction you are getting is not good. I found an all night pharmacy works best because there are so many worrying things that can come up in he first 8 weeks of any anti-dep drug that an expert can help with. In my case all of my issues were nothing and they all passed but everyone is different.

I agree with Gretta completely.

There are some (less commonly occurring) situations where it would be okay to allow your primary care physician to Rx and oversee a medication like an antidepressant (ie a temporary/acute issue), but for the most part, it's best to have a psychiatrist handling the management of these meds.  They have more knowledge and more day to day experience with them.

The vast majority of people who seek out meds for conditions like depression or anxiety usually deal with these issues chronically.  Just like you would insist on a cardiologist managing a chronic heart condition, the same would apply here, for our mental health as well.

How are you doing?

Was this doctor a psychiatrist?
Psychiatrists, most of them, have more specific information on antidepressants, as well as other meds that might be beneficial for your situation.  My own general physician admitted to me he did not know much about AD's.

How long have you been on it?  These kinds of meds take time to make noticeable improvements, and often times, they make you feel a little worse before you feel better.  There is no magic fix, it takes time.  What else are you doing?  Are you in therapy?

I was on that for a while and it made everything worse. Now I'm on venlafaxine and it works wonderfully.
