Depression In Others

Having been through a severe depressive state, I am now starting to see some of the things I went through affecting the person that is now my boss.  I am concerned for her and her well being, but how do I go about telling her.  I do not want to risk the somewhat fragile sort of working relationship we have, but I also feel that I should tell her something as I really do not want her to go through the depressive state I am recovering [one day at a time] from.  If anyone has any advice on how I should tackle the subject please let me know.

Just be open and listen, if she wants to tell you she will.

Hopefully she has friends and family who are there for her and at the moment you are still recovering, so take care of yourself.

Your heart is in the right place, and I agree with Mike on this. I also don't talk to many about my depression, people can be so judgemental about this condition. There is a fine line between you and your boss, and even good intentions can wreak havoc if it is crossed.  You're sweet to care, but don't jeopordize yourself here.  She may already be in treatment or on meds and wants it kept private due to her position within the company. Take care...

Hi, you clearly have the best of intentions however I would strongly recommend that you not stray from business related communications unless this person approaches you.

Although we know that depression is an illness there remains an unfortunate stigma associated with it. I am very selective with who I share my personal challenges with. Although it may not make sense I am concerned that once someone knows they will always see the depression first and me second.

Instead of bringing you closer to your boss, it is very possible you could drive a wedge that could jeopardize the work relationship.

If this was simply a friend, it would be different. Please give this a lot of thought before/if you take the step.   Mike
