Depresson and Dating

Is it possible to meet someone new when suffering from depression? Everyone I know says the same line about "you can't love anyone until you learn to love yourself". If this is true, why do so many people want to be in a relationship? If someone's truely happy with themselves, they would be happier to be by themselves, right?

Hello there,

Not only it is possible but if it can make you happy it could ease or even cure your depression. Don't let the other people tell you what to do and listen to heart. Personally i would go for it as it can make you an happy person. If you date a careful person it can only be good for you.

I'm no expert, i don't know you, i don't know how long you've been single but maybe being single is adding up to the depression. The only risk is if it turns bad that it could break your heart which you don't need at the moment.

Anyway, listen to you heart and do what you think is the best. No one can tell you what to do, we are talking about you, your intention and your life. Do what you think will make you happier.

Best wishes,
M4

Yes, you can meet someone while depressed.  But knowing why you're depressed may play a role here.  If your depression has nothing to do with you being alone, you enjoy your own company, and don't feel you "need" to have someone in your life, then why worry about it? If you are truly content with yourself, and your life, don't change it.  Not everyone feels the need to be in a relationship, but rather it tends to be our nature.  You know, we want someone we care share everything with, etc.  But one should never enter into a realtionship for the sake of being in one. Enjoying one's own company and solitude is wonderful.  For some, it isn't a good experience.  It may just be that for now you're content with not being in a realtionship, but it can change with time, or someone may just happen in your life that you want to be a part of your life.  M4 is correct, follow your heart, do what makes you happy, and the rest will fall in place.  Take care...

Hello, I have had depression/bi-polar for 14 years now and will give you my opion, remember it is just my opion you can take it or just forget. I have been married since 2001 and let me tell you it is no flipping party. Yes life would be nice to share the joys and events and such in our life, but if you are happy where you are (being alone for now) that is, then enjoy it and when the time is right the right person will come into your life. As for me once my divorce is final I am going to enjoy friends for now and I will pray in the meantime that God send the RIGHT person in my life this time instead of me making the choice and the wrong decision again.

Prayers and I am here if you want to talk or just a shoulder to lean on,
April M.

Partners are to enrich life.  If they don't, no need to have one.  But not partner will do a thing about your illnesses, whatever they may be.  And in case you haven't noticed, a lot of depressed people have fine relationships, and a lot of not depressed people have lousy ones, so nobody can guarantee a good relationship for anyone.

I've been wondering this too lately. But I think that others can help us see a different side to ourselves or our life. They can show us our strengths and qualities that we may have hidden or forgotten about. So maybe it can help. I'm gonna take the plunge this weekend (date)...very nervous as it's been over two years, but am excited as well. Kinda gives me something to hope for. Good luck!
