can depression cause what feels like numbness in the brain?

absolutely. When I have had certain depression it feels as if my head if stuffed with cotton wool that I cannot think around. It feels like your brain kind of stops working. Sometimes I got nothing in there at all, and of course that makes you emotionally numb I assume which is another problem.
All I can suggest is to try to ride it through with help and medication and it will pass as most things do with bipolar but it may take time...

yep, I've felt that way several times, like a robot just doing routine things without any feelings/emotions whatsoever. of course the actual reason would only be known to a psychiatrist.
