Wow you guys are waaaaay off melancholic depression is a more severe form of depression which is psychotic in nature. It gets it's name because it is depression coupled with an extreme apathy and inability to feel joy when say complimented etc. It's always worse in the mornings. I highly recommend that if you think you have this you speak to a dr immediately as some people (myself Included) suffer from psychotic episodes of intense fear and rage. It's also treated with a different type of medications and can often be misdiagnosed as major depression. Hope that helps.
Melancholic depression is honestly just the same as Major Uni-polar depression.
Just a different twist on the name. The treatment options are the same as with Uni-polar depression.
If I recall correctly, Melancholic depression is just like major Depression but a bit less cronic and severe. It's just an acronim that Psychiatrist use to target the actual severity of the condition.
Just pretty much the same as Major depression.
Hi,
I think for the most part the two words, melancholy and depression, are and can be used interchangeably. In the early part of the last century the term for depression was "melancholy". Probably refers to the sadness a lot of folks feel in depression.
Are you being treated with any medications or therapy. I hope you are doing well and get through this.

Why not ask a doctor on the Doctor's Forum on Medhelp? They are more knowledgeable than us laypeople. I have dysthymia, which is a low level depression. I don't know if that's the same things a melancholic depression. As I said, I would go on Medhelp's Doctor Forum, and ask a doctor under the heading of mental health. Good luck.
Blessings,
Ellen
