What should I do?

I'm apathetic to an extreme degree. I find that I never worry about anything because there's nothing in my life I really care about. I have many friends but am frequently dissapointed by them. Sure it's nice not to worry about anything but, I'm constantly lonely and don't feel my life has any worth. The only reason I didn't kill myself a long time ago is because I don't want the people I care about to feel the pain I do.

P.S. You can start with a regular medical doctor as suggested above.  But take in your posting or communicate what you have written so that the doctor realizes the extent of your feelings.

Your best bet is to see a psychiatrist.  Sorry that I don't remember the name of the disorder.  By telling you that you needed more in your life was just in agreement with what you were saying.  You need more that interests you so that you can have more happiness.  Perhaps counseling might help you too.  But don't take it that any of your feelings are your fault.  It's not your fault and it sounds like you are ready to have a better life.  Wish you the best.

I am not a doctor, and am recovering from depression myself.

It sounds to me that the only thing you are not apathetic towards is your own life and whats going on in it.  I find that in alot of cases apathy is a coping behavior that keeps you from being hurt or disappointed ..You also say that you haven't committed suicide because it would hurt people you care about.

You need to see a Medical Doctor who can do a few tests to determine if there is something physical going on with you and if you check out physically sound you can get a referral to a Counselor or Group that deals with depression...

I wish you the very best

You definitely need to have more in your life. At least have you tried counseling?  It sounds like you may need medication.  There are mental disorders which are characterized by apathy.  Seek out some medical help and show them what you just wrote.  There is a better life out there for you. Sara
