I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father.  As a parent myself, your letter really tugs at my heart.

I agree with Nursegirl that it is very important for many reasons to get some help with your self medicating.  I do hope you will take advantage of our groups and post how you are feeling while you are working through your feelings about your Fathers death and other feelings that you might not even be aware of yet.

There are several Free Anonymous Groups in the Country, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Emotions Anonymous where you can just show up for a meeting and listen to other members of the group talk about their lives, and their journey to healing.  You don't have to say a word or even admit you are an addict or alcoholic, but after listening for a few meetings, it is very hard to not just start sharing parts of your life.

I do wish you the very best in your journey.  It will not be easy, but it is very very rewarding.

First, I'm so sorry about the loss of your Dad.  Was he ill?  Was his death sudden or kind of expected?  There's no easy way to get through such a loss, you have to allow yourself to go through the stages of grief, reaching out for support as needed, whether it be to your loved ones, or professionals in a therapy environment.  Both is even better.  Don't underestimate the power of a grief support group too.  I recommend that to anyone dealing with a loss.

I admire your honesty and you admitting that you're self medicating.  What kind of drugs are you abusing?  Is this new for you or do you have a history of addiction?  Obviously, that needs addressed in a big way.  The sooner you start working on your recovery, the better, as addiction is a progressive disease that only gets worse.  There are only three outcomes for addiction.....death, institutionalization (ie jail), or recovery.  The outcome is in YOUR hands, you can do this.

I strongly advise you to seek out some addiction help ASAP.  Depending on what you're abusing, you may need professional medical care to help you detox.  Some substances are actually dangerous to come off without medical supervision (ie alcohol, benzodiazepines).  Don't let fear of w/d hold you back, that's what holds so many addicts back.  Of course it's unpleasant, but it's only temporary.  It's a worth it trade off to feel lousy for a short time in order to get your life back and break the chains of addiction.

Please also check out our addiction community.  I'm a regular poster there as well and I can tell you that the folks there are amazing.  They will give you loads of info and support, 200% judgement free.  Most of the members there have their own history of addiction, some with years of clean time, some with just hours, but they're all fighting the battle together.  Addiction isn't a struggle meant to fight alone.

Here's the link to our Addiction forum:

Very best to you, please keep posting, and let us know how you're doing.  We're here for you.  Hang in there!!

Good job for reaching out and recognizing you need help ! Proud of you ! The best thing you can do is talk about your feelings. Talk about your loss. Talk about being sad. Talk about how it has effected you. Even writing in a journal can be helpful - I speak from experience. Sorry to hear about your loss. I highly recommend a grief support group. There are many grief support groups in the country to help people deal with the loss of a loved one. If you google "grief support groups + the name of your city - you should get a list of local resources that can provide you places where you can go and find support. Grief is real and needs to be dealt with. I too have lost my dad and other family members. Its hard but I got through it by finding support groups, by writing and by talking about it in therapy. You will get through this. You don't need the drugs. Allow yourself to grieve your loss. its ok to grieve. Its a normal part of life. You will be ok. You will get through this. There is help out there !!!

Hi ,
I am extremely sorry to hear about losing your dad . Any loss is painful .
Are you in psychotherapy . If not please try to get it also .

This site ALSO will help you as you will get some support from here too .  Please write in the journals and write as even expressing your thoughts will give some relief ,

Please write more about yourself and go through the videos . And in addition get help in the form of PSYCHOTHERAPY and also if needed medication . How long since you lost your dad and when you started taking drugs . ? Drugs and alcohol as you know may not help so get help from professionals ..
