Atypical looking mole -- should we get it checked out?

My partner has a mole on his back. It is about 5 mm and mostly brown throughout. It is oval shaped. He has had it for several years and it has not changed. We are in between insurance companies and cannot see a dermatologist for several months. Do you think it is a cause for concern if it has not changed size, shape or color over several years?
