Can a child have red moles?

My 8 year old seems to have developed 4 or 5 tiny red spots.  One under his eyebrow, one on his finger, one on his foot, one on his knee.  I first noticed them during the past several months - he claims he's had them forever but I'm not so sure.  I think the one on his finger might have looked like a small cut and then just shrank into a tiny red dot that isn't going away. Any ideas?  He has pale skin and many light brown moles as well.  Thanks...

Hi,

If this is the case, freckles are clusters of concentrated melanin that can be triggered by  exposure to sunlight. They are more common  on children before puberty. Having freckles is genetic  and are predominantly found on the face and any other are of skin exposed to the sun.  They may fade with age.

Take care and regards.

Thanks for the response.  These 4 spots are flat, not domed shaped.  They are tiny - the size of the head of a pin or smaller.  I recall asking the pediatrician about the one on his foot and she responded that it was just a freckle.  Just wondering why more are popping up.

Hi,

It is normal for new moles to appear during childhood and adolescence. Moles will grow as the child grows. There are several kinds of moles: common mole , congenital mole, atypical mole or spitz nevus.  Spitz nevus is a pink, raised, dome-shaped lesion. It also can contain variable colors such as red, black, and brown. The mole may bleed an can have opening that oozes. I recommend that you have this evaluated further by your dermatologist.  This link may be helpful: http://www.skincarephysicians.com/SkinCancerNet/moles_children.html

Take care and keep us posted.
